Every TV production is under pressure to save money - use this Post Production Checklist

Downgrading on gear and cutting down on crew are methods for diminishing expenses, but they also reduce production value. You can make enormous savings basically by being organised in the TV post production process. Don't waste time and make sure all you do in the edit suite is actually editing. It's doesn't take much to incorporate a Post Production Checklist but it can save you for a lot of trouble.

1. Make a TV post production plan

Planning in reverse, marking key and delivery dates are all useful for creating a working structure and making sure the TV post production is running as smooth as possible

2. Communicate with your team

Group communication can be a mess, but often it's the most effective way to minimise any miscommunication and errors during the post production process. Establishing an easy way for everyone to be updated with what’s happening will for sure save hours

3. Agree on format

Way to often, you’ll hear the saying “We fix that in post production” Don't forget inconsistent frame rates and formats can delay your editing. Discuss and agree on the format and frame rate you want to work with, and make sure that the camera team are informed

4. Log all files

Reduce the time spent searching.
The more information you can bring into the files, the better. Logging your footage before starting to edit means that you'll be able to search for key words and easily find everything

5. Read the delivery specs

Make sure that you understand what you need to deliver to the broadcaster before your production starts. Discovering that you're expected to provide 10 masters, with different technical specs and rights clearances, on the last day of post can really set you back in TV post production

6. Get clearance

Anything you dwell on in your recordings, e.g. a brand or a piece of music, will need clearance, "every platform, global rights, forever" is the ideal clearance. In the contract it will be described what clearance the broadcaster and production company agreed on. If this is ignored, it can lead to enormous hassle later on

7. Back up everything.

What is the worst thing that could happen in TV post production? You loose all material! You’ll want more than one drive and keep multiple copies on separate drives in separate locations.
Back up the back up and then back up again.
